How Traveling Nurses Find Work Assignments
By Peter C Johnson
A traveling nurse is a unique occupation, in that they often move seamlessly from work assignment to work assignment without any downtime between work. Anyone who has struggled to find work will find this hard to believe, however there is a constant demand for traveling nurses specifically in the US. Further to this a well-organised traveling nurse will never have to return home, if they structure their work assignments correctly. This might seem unachievable, but there are many traveling nurses who live and work like this.
You need to consider that traveling nurses are not employed by the hospitals or medical facilities where they work; rather they are employed by a traveling nurse agency. A traveling nurse agency will take care of all the details for the traveling nurse- they will find them accommodation, they will give them a traveling allowance to cover traveling expenses. Further to this they will always ensure the nurse can legally work in the prospective state, and most crucially they will manage the traveling nurses pay checks to ensure they are being renumerated correctly at all times.
The traveling nurse agency provides the traveling nurse with the current work assignment. Traveling nurse agencies vary as to how they match the nurses with the work assignments. Certain traveling nurse agencies will actively seek out the work assignment that best matches the candidate, while other traveling nurse agencies will simply post job vacancies on their website. In this instance a traveling nurse can frequently scan their agencies website, till they find the right traveling nurse assignment, then request to be put forward for the job.
Now the traveling nurse has made clear which assignment they wish to pursue, it is the traveling nurse agencies turn to ensure they are appropriately qualified. Once the traveling nurse meets the qualifications, the agency will check to see they have the correct license to work as a traveling nurse in the state. At this point if a further license is required, the agency will sort out the paperwork on behalf of the traveling nurse.
Now the traveling nurse has accepted the assignment and has all necessary documentation, the next step is for the agency to find accommodation for the nurse. This might take a few days. While the traveling nurses agency sorts out the accommodation, it is the nurse's responsibility to decide which form of travel they are going to use to reach the destination of their work assignment. This will completely depend on the location of the work assignment, and whether or not the traveling nurse has access to a car. For assignments in large cities, it is usually far more cost effective for a traveling nurse to fly and use public transportation.
The beauty of being a traveling nurse is that you are very well looked after by your traveling nurse agency. Specifically the reason for this, is that the agency receives commission for every single assignment you successfully take and complete, so it is always in their best interests to match you with as many as possible assignments that meet your qualifications and needs as a traveling nurse. The benefits are excellent for a traveling nurse and there is always a demand- specifically in more tourist-orientated locations.
