Travel Nurse - Get Paid To Travel
By L. Charles Fernandez
Nurses are one of the most sought-after professionals today. Needless to say, there are a lot of opportunities for them all over the world. In the U.S. alone, there are quite a number of vacancies for qualified nurses to fill. And one of them is the position of a traveling nurse.
The traveling nurse profession is a career that allows one to assume a short-term position anywhere in the country. And that position was induced by the relatively high demand for nurses, primarily due to their shortage, in certain areas. To provide a solution for this, hospitals are more than willing to pay travel nurses with very high rates in exchange for filling-in a certain position for a short period of time.
More often than not, traveling nurses stay in a particular workplace anywhere from three months to as long as one year. It all depends upon the hospital's job requirements, really. Also, it is the employer who provides for the nurse's housing. And in the absence of a housing facility, subsidies are given instead.
The need for traveling nurses arises when full-time nurses resigned, took a leave, or need to be absent for a certain period of time. In such cases where nurse replacements are yet to be hired, traveling nurses are called in to fill the void. Of course, traveling nurses can choose to take over the vacant full-time position the moment it is offered to them.
There isn't a definite wage rate for travel nurses. This is because most hospitals choose to pay them with regards to their experience, specialty, and location. But then again, the average travel nurse is paid anywhere from $24 to as much as $35 per hour. They are also paid something extra in the form of housing subsidy. If travel nurses are assigned in areas that have higher cost of living like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, the pay is expected to be higher.
To find opportunities for travel nurses, just look for job openings in the newspapers, specialty magazines, and over the internet. Large hospitals and medical facilities are now openly advertising their requirements for traveling nurses. But if you want to make the whole task of applying for the job simpler, all you have to do is to sign-up with a traveling nurse recruiter.
The recruiter can take a portion of your salary as a fee for their services though, so your rates may not be that high. But then again, you can explore a lot of opportunities with them as they have lots of hospital and health care institutions as contacts. You will be free to look around and assume the position you want to take. You can also get another job immediately after your current position has expired.
The presence of the different laws governing nursing practice in every state is the most common inconvenience that is experienced by travel nurses. If the travel nurse doesn't hold a RN or a registered nurse degree license, he or she might find it hard to work in certain places. What the nurse needs to do is to first obtain a temporary license from the state government where he or she intends to work. The travel nurse recruitment agency is more than willing to help nurses in applying for a license.
So if you want to jumpstart your nursing career as a travel nurse, these are the facts that you need to know. With all of these said, travel nurses indeed have the opportunity to move around the country, enjoy different lifestyles, and of course, serve more people.
